LGBTQ Couples Welcome!

On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v Hodges made marriage equality the law of the land. Sadly, some marriage officiants continue to discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary and queer couples.

Indeed, sometimes loving couples share their painful stories about officiants refusing to perform their ceremony. With this in mind, letting LGBTQ couples know that you are inclusive can alleviate any unease they may have before they contact you.

Code of Ethics

Of course you welcome all couples. After all, you are a member of the Justice of the Peace Association. In other words, as a member you agree to abide by our Code of Ethics. This requires treating people of all backgrounds and identities fairly and with respect. Furthermore, you always act in your clients’ best interest. Discrimination is not tolerated.

How to Say It

Now, the question is, how to convey that you are inclusive and affirming? Oh, so many options to consider! Review the following for inspiration to craft your own message, or feel free to use one as written.

Make sure that the photos on your findaJP.com profile represent diverse clientele
Include testimonials from same-sex couples who were happy with your services
Some language that can be included in the About Me on your findaJP profile:

“I welcome ALL loving couples.”
“I am a supporter of marriage equality.”
“Same-sex and interfaith/racial couples are warmly welcomed.”
“As a member of the Justice of the Peace Association, I proudly follow ourCode of Ethics and welcome all couples.”
“I practice the Justice of the Peace Association’s Core Values, including inclusion and integrity.”
“I welcome LGBTQ couples.”
